Montessori PhilosophyThe Montessori philosophy and method is a comprehensive early childhood education system named after its founder. Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori believed that birth to age six was the most critical time for learning during an individual's life. She observed that children have an "absorbent natural" desire to discover the world around them during this period. The Fraserview Montessori Preschool & Kindergarten Method aims to free the child's potential for constructive development by building self-esteem and self-motivation. At the Montessori Preschool, we strive to develop cognitive and perceptual skills and initiate a process of concentration and an intrinsic desire for learning now and in the future. This philosophy meets individual needs while offering an open, holistic and flexible approach to preschool education. |
Fraserview Montessori Preschool & Kindergarten Environment
There are two critical components to the classroom: The specially prepared materials and the teacher, whose role is to link the environment and the child. In the Montessori Preschool, there are four main areas that we focus on, which are as follows:
Practical life exercisesThe Practical Life activities are related to daily living skills and include activities such as pouring, spooning, tonguing, washing, polishing and sweeping. These exercises help the children become independent and care for their own needs while developing coordination and concentration.
|
SensorialSensorial activities aid in developing and refining a child's senses. The child learns how to discriminate differences and similarities in size and dimension, learning how to grade colours and identify geometric shapes. Activities for all senses begin with simple tasks and move toward materials that require more skills.
|
LanguageThe language materials provide modes of activity by which a child acquires the essential skills for reading and writing. The program begins with learning the phonetic sounds of the alphabet. It then progresses to word blending and to reading phonetically before learning more complex language materials.
|
MathematicsThe math materials allow the child to discover for themselves the concept of quantity and number identification and then proceed to an introduction to the decimal system, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Additional ActivitiesOur curriculum also includes a wide variety of activities involving the study of geography and biology through which the children can begin to discover the world around them. In addition to the above curriculum, the Montessori Preschool also provides a Music program and a French program. Our music program involves learning beats, rhythm, and songs.
